Sizing a mini-split for this area starts with what the equipment will actually run against. 190 severe weather events were recorded in Warren County, Ohio between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition in Warren County, and a contractor who quotes without accounting for it will undersize the unit or skip mounting and sealing details that matter when conditions get hard. The placement of the outdoor unit, the line-set routing, and the quality of the electrical connection all carry more consequence here than they would somewhere the system rarely gets pushed.

Unfinished basement or crawl space with exposed wooden floor joists, insulated flexible and metal ductwork, a concrete block wall, a coiled black corrugated pipe, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Electrical service is what determines whether a mini-split installation is straightforward or a two-trade job. Half the homes in Warren County, Ohio were built in 1995 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built by then were wired around the equipment of that period, and the panel a contractor pulls the cover off today was sized for it. Mini-splits draw differently than what those panels were designed around, and when the capacity is not there, the electrician comes before the HVAC work can finish. The ductwork question that dominates installation in older ducted homes largely drops away with a ductless system, so the panel becomes the variable that decides how the job goes.

What Gets Installed With a New Mini-split

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing three wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units in two rooms connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The outdoor unit, called the condenser, mounts on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and fan. Inside, the air handler attaches high on a wall in the room being conditioned. It draws in room air, conditions it, and delivers it back through its front grille.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, bundled with the power and communication wiring and a condensate drain line. A dedicated disconnect box mounts on the exterior wall near the condenser, giving the system its own shutoff point.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits your specific home and how each piece gets positioned.
